El informe destaca que la generación de calor en la UE es aún altamente dependiente de los combustibles fósiles: el 78% se genera por combustión de fósiles ocasionando el 34% de todas las emisiones de Europa.
En 2019, del 22% de aporte renovable a la generación térmica, nada menos que el 85% se obtuvo de la bioenergía. Es también destacable que el 74% del consumo de bioenergía en la UE se destinó a generar calor, muy por encima de la generación eléctrica y de su uso como biocarburante.
- En calefacción doméstica, la bioenergía aportó el 84,3% de toda la energía renovable dedicada a este fin (las energías renovables para calefacción doméstica representaron el 24% del total).
- En redes de calor, las energías renovables aportaron el 27,6% del total, con la bioenergía como máximo exponente: supone el 96,5% de las fuentes renovables desde 2000.
- En la industria, prácticamente el 100% de la energía renovable para generar calor proviene de bioenergía, representando el 14,2% del total de la energía consumida en este sector.
Hoy en día, alrededor del 60% de los dispositivos de calefacción de la UE tendrían una etiqueta energética de clase C, D o incluso inferior por su baja eficiencia. Por este motivo, Bioenergy Europe defiende el reemplazo de equipos obsoletos y alimentados con combustibles fósiles por tecnologías avanzadas de biomasa, lo que contribuiría a reducir las emisiones de GEI y aumentaría el ahorro de los usuarios, y aboga por priorizar la penetración de las energías renovables en las redes de calor urbanas.
