Javier Díaz, president of AVEBIOM, emphasizes the importance of this collaboration: «The exchange of experiences and knowledge between Germany and Spain in the field of biogas and biomethane is fundamental to driving innovation and sustainability in our industries. We look forward to learning from each other and moving forward together towards a more efficient energy transition.»
Frank Hofmann, consultant in International Affairs at Fachverband Biogas eV, and Markus Kemper, deputy director of the German Chamber of Commerce for Spain (AHK), share in an interview their perspectives on the role of biogas in the European energy transition and the possibilities that are opening up for closer collaboration between Germany and Spain.
The presence of the two leading industry associations in Germany underlines the importance of this event for German companies interested in promoting their biogas technologies in our country.
Markus Kemper The event highlights the extensive German participation: «"Numerous German companies have already confirmed their participation in the Renewable Gas Exhibition. These include project developers, plant builders, and manufacturers of components such as crushing technology, gas storage and purification systems, as well as service providers for the production and marketing of biomethane."»
According to Frank Hofmann, «"Biogas can and will contribute substantially to the energy transition in Europe. Currently, biogas and biomethane account for around 6.1% of European natural gas consumption, more than 220 TWh of energy production per year. This technology allows for a balance between production and consumption on the electricity grid, especially in contexts of wind and solar energy volatility."»
Hofmann also highlights the environmental advantages of biogas and biomethane, which, in addition to producing renewable energy, is the only technology that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and can demonstrate negative CO2 equivalents.
Spanish-German meeting
Within the framework of the Renewable Gas Exhibition The Spanish-German Meeting on Biogas and Biomethane will be held, an excellent opportunity to strengthen cooperation between companies from both countries and promote joint projects.
The AHK Barometer for spring 2024 reflects growing optimism among German companies regarding the Spanish economy. According to Markus Kemper, «931% of German companies rate their business outlook for the next 12 months as positive or stable. Spain has enormous potential in the biogas and biomethane sector, and there is a clear political commitment to these technologies to reduce dependence on fossil gas imports.»
Luis Puchades, president of AEBIG, highlights that "collaboration between German and Spanish companies will allow us to harness the potential of biogas and biomethane technologies and ensure sustained growth. German expertise and the current boom in the Spanish market can lead to major advances in the production and use of renewable gases."«

In the interview, Frank Hofmann and Markus Kemper emphasize the importance of biogas and biomethane in the European energy transition. They also highlight the flexibility of German biogas plants, which are capable of stabilizing the electricity grid and reducing its greenhouse gas emissions.
They also mention the growing trend towards the use of biomethane in transport and the production of fertilizers from digestates, which increases the profitability of the plants.
The interviewees also point out that a favorable regulatory framework and regulatory simplicity are essential for the development of the sector, and that energy resilience, promoted by a decentralized infrastructure, is fundamental in the current geopolitical context.
The Renewable Gas Show is an event organized by the Spanish Biomass Association (AVEBIOM) with the support of the Spanish Biogas Association (AEBIG).
