At its last general assembly, the Board of Directors of Bioenergy Europe It has addressed critical issues for the future of the bioenergy sector in the EU, such as the electrification of the economy and EUDR regulations.
PABLO RODERO, responsible for certification at AVEBIOM, member of the board of directors and current president of the European Pellet Council, assures that “Bioenergy can complement the electrification of the EU energy system, reducing the costs of the energy transition for both member state governments and at the local level.”.
In this regard, the example of the Suosiola plant stands out, demonstrating how residual and renewable resources of local origin can be transformed into renewable energy, perfectly integrating into the current energy system; “a perfect example of a circular economy.”.
«"The future of the EU's energy system cannot depend on a single 'magic ingredient'.". The aim is to achieve a balanced mix, in which valuing local resources will guarantee the resilience and flexibility of the system. All solutions will have their place, but certainly «"Economic sustainability must be carefully considered to maintain the competitiveness of the EU economy, and in this, locally sourced biomass will play a crucial role."»

A power plant in transition towards renewable technologies
At its Suosiola plant, located in Rovaniemi, the Finnish company Neve Oy has implemented a series of projects with the aim of ensuring its transition to greener energy sources and definitively abandoning the use of fossil fuels in this decade.
Since 2020, the Suosiola plant has undergone several modifications to utilize a 100% wood biofuel, a significant change reflecting the company's strategy toward generating fossil CO2-free energy. Furthermore, the plant plans to incorporate an electric boiler and a wastewater heat pump by 2025, which will optimize energy use and minimize the environmental impact of its operations.
The sludge incineration plant, operational since 2019, is a highlight. Here, nutrients are recovered and recycled from the sludge, generating energy for Rovaniemi's district heating network. This facility covers 280 km and supplies 2,700 customers, providing heat to approximately 22,000 people. This innovative circular economy project for waste treatment has been recognized as a "Key Project in Nutrient Recovery" by the Finnish Ministry of the Environment.
The diversity of energy sources used by Neve Oy, which includes woody biomass, peat, sludge and biogas, electricity or waste heat recovery to the detriment of coal and petroleum derivatives, demonstrates its adaptability and commitment to optimizing energy management.
