The project, promoted by Burgos Ecoenergías, a subsidiary of ENGIE, plans to start work in June and supply 65 GWh of thermal energy per year through a renewable mix with biomass, biogas and shallow geothermal energy.

Burgos is preparing to begin construction on the Gamonal renewable heat network, an infrastructure project promoted by Burgos Ecoenergies, subsidiary of ENGIE, which will allow the supply of heating and domestic hot water to homes, public buildings and industry through a centralized renewable thermal generation system.

The project, announced by ENGIE in the fall of 2025, has now taken a new administrative step and It plans to start construction in June., with the construction of the power plant on La Lora Street and the deployment of the main backbone network. The network has a target completion date of Entering service in spring 2028, according to information released in recent days by the Burgos City Council and local media.

The project involves an investment of €30.7 million and a 35-year concession. In its first phase, the network will have 10 kilometers of distribution lines and will supply around 65 GWh of thermal energy per year, an amount equivalent to the consumption of approximately 7,300 homes.

The power plant will have 16 MW of thermal capacity fueled by biomass, 4.5 MW using biogas, and 500 kW via a heat pump powered by shallow geothermal energy. It will also incorporate a 2,800 m³ thermal storage tank, which will improve production management and allow for better adaptation of the supply to heat demand.

The network will initially serve the Gamonal area and the Burgos Este industrial park, with a scalable design that will allow for increased capacity and coverage as new users join. The project also includes the use of surplus heat from companies in the industrial park, reinforcing its integrated nature and its connection to local economic activity.
