CENER develops an algorithm to improve biomass feeding to boilers

Centro de Biorrefinería y Bioenergía (BIO2C) de CENER

Working with biomass of different densities and characteristics (wood chips, olive pits, sawdust, etc.) creates difficulties in regulating its feed to the boiler, which can damage the equipment and reduce its efficiency.

An algorithm designed by CENER's Biorefinery and Bioenergy Center (BIO2C) reduces the time it takes for systems to feed a specific flow rate of biomass and increases their stability and accuracy.

This algorithm, which can be programmed in the software plant control, detects parameters such as density o biomass moisture and acts on different equipment to determine, for example, the speed of a conveyor belt depending on the flow rate introduced.

The researchers have reduced the response time - the period it takes the system to feed a specific flow of biomass - by at least 30%.

The algorithm has been and is currently applied in torrefaction and gasification processes carried out at CENER, but it is exportable to other processes that feed solids of variable characteristics as occurs with biomass, for example in the food industry.

ALIGAS It is a collaborative project led by CENER, a center associated with AVEBIOM, with the participation of Association of the Navarre Industry (AIN). The initiative is coordinated by ADItech -in turn, coordinator of the Navarrese R&D&I System (SINAI)– and it has funding from the regional government.
