Increasingly, bioenergy facilities and companies in Spain are choosing to certify the sustainability and traceability of the biomass they use or manage through the voluntary scheme. SURE (Sustainable Resources Verification Scheme), recognized by the European Commission as a valid system in accordance with the new Renewable Energy Directive RED III
SURE has become a benchmark for the bioenergy sector in Europe and Spain. This system ensures that the biomass used, whether from forestry, agriculture, or by-products, complies with the strict sustainability criteria of the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) and Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022/996. This entails, among other requirements, the detailed recording of all stages of the supply chain in the Union Database (UDB), which guarantees complete traceability from origin, transport, and processing to the final use of the biomass.
ENGIE's projects in Spain certified this month by SURE are the KAO plant in Olesa de Montserrat, which has replaced a natural gas cogeneration plant with biomass and achieves a 95% reduction in direct CO₂ emissions; the installation of a 36 MW biomass boiler at the Alier paper mill in Roselló (Lleida), one of the largest in Spain; and the Txantrea district heating network plant in Pamplona, which supplies more than 2,000 homes and public buildings with locally sourced forest biomass.
Janis Rey, ENGIE's Managing Director in Spain, says that the SURE certification helps guarantee the company's commitment to sustainable and fully traceable energy solutions, which benefits industries and the local environment.
With nearly 400 certificates in Spain, SURE is helping bioenergy facilities demonstrate that they meet European sustainability and traceability standards, aligned with the EU's climate goals.
