The data comes from a recent study by the company tado°, carried out on 300,000 European households that have one of their heating measurement and control devices.
Despite the fact that the average temperature in Europe during the winter has been 0.6°C higher than the previous year, people have spent more time at home due to the rise of teleworking and this, as Christian Deilmann, co-founder and CPO of tado°, points out, has a significant impact on heating and hot water costs.
In Spain, the winter was normal - according to AEMET - except in January, which, due to the two cold waves that hit the interior of the peninsula, achieved an average of 5.1 ºC, a value that is 0.6 ºC below the average for this month in the last 40 years.
In Madrid, a region particularly affected by Storm Filomena, heating consumption skyrocketed by 47% during the event, according to a study by the company ISTA, which has one million water and heating consumption accounting devices in Spain.
In Europe, heating and cooling of buildings and industry account for half of energy consumption, ahead of transport and electricity.
Heating and domestic hot water production account for approximately three-quarters of a household's energy consumption; slightly more than 211% of total energy consumption for heating in the EU comes from renewable sources, with biomass contributing two-thirds of renewable production. Two-thirds of the energy used for heating, cooling, and hot water in residential buildings still comes from fossil fuels.
Smart thermostats to save on heating
The Smart thermostats can make it easier to heat only occupied rooms, or achieve additional savings thanks to features such as climate adaptation or open window detection, among others.. Installing technologies that improve the energy efficiency of homes allows you to save on your bill and maintain comfort, the CPO reminds us.
In Spain, before the end of 2025, cold and hot water meters older than 12 years must be replaced with new technology.Ministerial Order ICT/155/2020According to ISTA, the change can represent an average saving of up to 15% for a household.
Biomass-fueled heating networks to guarantee savings and comfort
Community-based renewable energy installations, such as biomass-fueled district heating networks, which maintain energy prices for consumers regardless of weather or market conditions, have proven their reliability during the harshest winter days. This is the case with the Soria's district heating network managed by REBI-Sustainable Heating.
