The event is one of the actions of the H2020 AgroBioHeat project and is being held to coincide with its midpoint, a very opportune moment to stimulate interest, transfer initial results and facilitate participation and access to information for the target stakeholders, belonging to the agricultural, rural, industrial and public administrations.
Through three agile two-hour sessions, real opportunities, ongoing initiatives, and emblematic cases will be presented.
Why is agricultural biomass important?
Agrobiomass from agricultural activities is a resource for the bioeconomy, with significant untapped potential. Among its possible uses, energy production offers the greatest opportunity for a short-term shift from the current paradigm, establishing local businesses for new value chains: harvesting, processing, supplying, and utilizing agrobiomass.
Unleashing these new uses is the first step towards making it easier for agrobiomass to be incorporated in the future into higher value-added uses of the bioeconomy, such as obtaining biomaterials or extracting high-value substances.
The AgroBioHeat project focuses on promoting small and medium-sized heat sources. In contrast to large power plants, AgroBioHeat proposes a model that creates greater synergies locallyThe energy generated locally is used to supply heating to homes, businesses, farms, greenhouses, the service sector, municipal heating networks, and local industries. Furthermore, it creates local jobs and opportunities, reduces pollution and burning, and fosters localized circularity.
In Spain, more than 1000 references related to the energy use of agricultural biomass have already been documented, collected in the European Observatory recently opened for public consultation.
ONLINE EVENT AGENDA
- Tuesday, January 26, is dedicated to forming a global vision of the bioeconomy and its key role in policy, agriculture and rural development towards 2030, and the potential that agrobiomass offers.
The European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture will convey the medium and long-term vision for the bioeconomy in the EU.
Speakers from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Spanish Rural Development Network will explain how the bioeconomy fits into the CAP and how it can be a lever for rural economic activation.
Technicians from AVEBIOM will present the potential of agrobiomass in Spain and the options already available for its energy valorization.
- On Wednesday, January 27, the current situation of agrobiomass in Spain for energy uses will be finalized., focusing on the available technologies, the opportunities, its barriers and the necessary lines of action to promote its valuation.
Five initiatives underway They will exemplify how they are overcoming barriers to generating new uses for wood through innovative technologies, processes, or initiatives. These include the development of agricultural machinery for pre-pruning vines; the establishment of pioneering facilities for using fruitwood for residential and industrial heating; the implementation of gasification and biochar systems in the olive oil industry; and the promotion of energy crops for heating in agribusiness and greenhouses.
- On Thursday, January 28, there will be a discussion on the key factors for generating new consumption with agrobiomass.
In an initial round table, Experts in promoting new uses will share their vision on how to make agrobiomass a reality for the agro-industry, in the residential and services sector, in public facilities or in the production of energy crops.
They will be presented five real cases of heat generation with agricultural biomass in rural environments: vine shoots for municipal heating networks; straw in the agro-industry and in the rural tourism sector; cooperative models; valued olive grove by-products ready for clean and certified consumption in the residential, municipal and industrial sectors.
