Biomass leads the renewal of heating systems in Austria

reemplazo de sistemas de calefaccion en Austria 2021-2024 por biomasa

Between 2021 and 2024, Austria replaced more than 157,000 old heating systems, supported by state programs “Get out of oil and gas” y “Clean heating for all”. The aim of this aid is to reduce the use of fossil fuels in the residential sector and promote more efficient and renewable alternatives.

During this period, 37,196 households replaced oil boilers with modern pellet boilers, to which are added 11,291 gas systems, almost 9,000 multi-fuel boilers y 968 electrical installations also replaced by biomass systems.

Heat pumps have also played a prominent role: 35,322 gas appliances have been replaced by this technology.

The economic impact is significant. According to ProPellets Austria, Households that have switched from fossil fuel heating to pellets can save up to 2,000 euros annually in their invoices, while also contributing to reducing emissions of greenhouse gases.

According to the Climate Protection Report 2024 (Climate protection report from the Austrian Ministry of the Environment) Replacing heating systems has had a direct effect on reducing emissions in Austria. Pellet heating systems commissioned in 2024 alone prevented approximately 120,000 tons of CO₂, contributing to a global decrease in greenhouse gas emissions 2,6 % in the country.

The report thus confirms that policies supporting the switch to new heating systems are succeeding in renewing the equipment stock, and are also generating tangible results in the fight against climate change.

This heating system upgrade places Austria among the European countries making the most progress in decarbonizing the residential sector. However, industry sources warn that, after the strong growth recorded up to 2024, maintaining this pace of replacement will depend on continuing public incentives and ensuring the availability of both solid biofuels and suitable equipment.
