The cleaning system, developed and patented by the R&D department, has shown its effectiveness and performance with different complex biomasses such as vine shoots, fruit tree uprootings, poplar stumps, almond chips or eucalyptus wood.
The first demonstrations These demonstrations took place during the summer of 2021 in Vilafranca del Penedès (Catalonia), Jumilla (Murcia), Logroño (La Rioja), Rías Baixas (Galicia), Garray (Soria), Mollerussa (Lleida), Palas de Rei (Lugo), and Gévora (Badajoz). Further demonstrations are planned in Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia.
These sessions have been developed within the framework of the project '‘Clean AgroBiomass Tech’', an initiative led by Athisa Biogeneración, financed by the Ministry of Industry and coordinated by OnTech Innovation, the largest business organization of digital economy and the largest technology and biotechnology cluster in Andalusia.
The use of complex biomass as an energy source is possible
Numerous regions in Spain have sufficient vineyard density to develop profitable, high-quality supply chains. To achieve this, it is necessary to valorize this biomass by removing inorganic contaminants such as stones, metals, plastics, etc.
The same applies to other woody agricultural biomass and some forest fractions (such as poplar stumps), which could increase their quality and market value, making them more profitable for the managers who market them.
The solution proposed by Athisa Biogeneración is demonstrating the technical and economic feasibility of utilizing these complex biomasses in different locations in Spain.
In addition to demonstrating the operation of the cleaning equipment, the company presented the biomass management model it has developed over 10 years in the town of Socuéllamos, in Castilla-La Mancha. This model is based on the concept of local biomass and on coordinating the different stakeholders in the biomass value chain, from the farmer to the end consumer.
This series of workshops was made possible through the collaboration of the Wine Technology Platform (PTV) in La Rioja; NUFRI in Lleida; VanMander and the Covides Cooperative in Vilafranca del Penedès; ENSO Global Energy Solutions and Bioeléctrica de Garray in Soria; the Mar de Frades winery and the Gomez y Penin pellet plant in Palas de Rei, Lugo; Marle in Gévora, Badajoz; and the BSI winery and REDFLEXION consultants in Jumilla, Murcia. AVEBIOM, the Spanish Association of Agri-food Cooperatives, and the University of Córdoba also supported this initiative.
Members of the University of Cordoba have carried out demonstrations of the NIRS system to determine biomass quality parameters such as ash, moisture and LHV.
