CEDER-CIEMAT is participating in a European project to promote energy crops on marginal agricultural land
The project E-BIOLAND, Funded by the European Commission, it aims to revitalize agricultural land that is no longer used to produce food, fiber and feed (or that is likely to cease doing so in the near future), with the cultivation of raw materials for biofuels.
The project will assess usable agricultural land in the 28 countries of the European Union, using geographic information systems (GIS); it will identify the underlying processes that cause land abandonment and determine what resources could be used for biomass cultivation.
The results of the project will help the European Commission to develop policy proposals to reclaim abandoned agricultural land and put it into production for energy crops.
Participants
E-BIOLAND corresponds to the English title of the project: Analysis of current land availability in the EU; trends in changes (abandoned land, low fertility land, saline land etc.) and options for energy crop utilization and is coordinated by Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands, in cooperation with CEDER-CIEMAT, and institutions in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Croatia.
Several members of the project recently met in Spain and toured several agricultural areas of Soria and Albacete, accompanied by Pilar Ciria, a researcher from Ceder-Ciemat.
