Biomass in Villacañas: local valorization and continuous operation
The Villacañas biomass plant, with an authorized capacity of 7.8 MW, primarily uses industrial byproducts from the area's large timber industry (sawdust and board offcuts), as well as biomass from forestry operations, valorizing around 50,000 tons annually that would otherwise end up in landfills. This integration of local resources has allowed the plant to avoid significant emissions since its commissioning.
At the process level, the facility works with biomass gasification and controlled oxidation to generate hot gases, produce steam in a boiler and use it to generate electricity.
