New developments in the SURE scheme, which certifies the sustainability of biomass in accordance with REDIII

SURE en castellano

The new scheme requirements and associated documents, such as self-declarations, apply with immediate effect and must be implemented by all scheme participants. Certificates and audits based on the previous requirements will remain valid.

Documents available in Spanish

The forms are now available in Spanish. SELF-DECLARATION and the translation of the RELEVANT DOCUMENTATION, which includes the following documents:

  1. Scope and basic requirements of the SURE system
  2. Principles of the scheme for the certification process – Requirements and specifications
  3. Principles of the scheme for the production of agricultural biomass
  4. Principles of the scheme for the production of forest biomass
  5. Principles of the scheme for the production of biomass waste and residues

  7. Definitions in the SURE system

What is SURE?

SURE is a voluntary biomass sustainability certification system developed by REDcert (a German company with experience in biofuel sustainability certification) and Bioenergy Europe (the European bioenergy association, with extensive knowledge of the biomass market and in managing certifications).

This scheme offers a practical solution to all stakeholders operating within the bioenergy sector who need to demonstrate compliance with the requirements of the current European Renewable Energy Directive. SURE is designed to certify all operators in the bioenergy sector, including agricultural and forestry biomass producers, biofuel producers from by-products and waste, pellet manufacturers, logistics operators, biofuel marketers, and biomass and biogas power plants.

The SURE scheme covers forest biomass (including energy crops), by-products or waste (such as recycled wood, olive pits and pomace), and also agricultural biomass (such as straw and maize).

Support in Spain

AVEBIOM is the national support organization in Spain. Its work includes supporting SURE on regional legal issues and organizing workshops and information events to explain the requirements and approaches of the SURE system to all stakeholders in the bioenergy value chain.

With these changes and the availability of documentation in Spanish, the SURE system continues to facilitate compliance with sustainability requirements in the bioenergy sector, aligning with European regulations and promoting sustainable practices throughout the value chain.
