Pellet companies that market their product in the European Union will have to review their packaging to comply with Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on packaging and packaging waste, in force since February 2025 and generally applicable from August 2026.

The new regulation directly affects pellet sacks, big bags and other transport packaging, and requires the sector to pay more attention to the design, recyclability and documentation associated with the packaging.

Among the most relevant aspects, The regulations require that the packaging be recyclable. and progressively limits the marketing of those products that do not meet the established minimum standards. It also strengthens the obligations to minimize weight and volume, incorporate clearer labeling, and provide technical justification for compliance with the requirements.

The new regulations not only require companies to adapt their packaging from a technical standpoint, but they can also influence the costs incurred by businesses, as they will penalize packaging that is more difficult to recycle and favor better-designed packaging.

For Pablo Rodero, president of the European Pellet Council and head of certification at AVEBIOM, “"Companies in the sector must anticipate and review their packaging solutions as soon as possible to avoid compliance problems and adapt in time to the new European requirements.".

AVEBIOM recommends that producers and distributors analyze how this regulation may affect their packaging formats, their suppliers, and their commercial operations.
