The pilot project has used 230 tons of slag from the Briviesca biomass plant, transforming this waste into a valuable resource for the glass industry.
Slag, a byproduct of biomass combustion in power plants, is used to replace some of the virgin materials, such as silica and sodium carbonate, in glass production while maintaining the quality of the final product.
The pilot has enabled the manufacture of 18.3 million bottles, reducing the need for traditional raw materials and CO₂ emissions. The project is also part of a broader strategy by Vidrala to decarbonize 100% of your energy consumption by 2030, supported by power purchase agreements (PPAs) and other self-consumption initiatives.
Furthermore, Acciona Energía's biomass plants are certified under Bureau Veritas' "Zero Waste Management" standard, which ensures that they minimize waste disposal to landfills.
This type of synergy between companies demonstrates that it is possible to efficiently integrate industrial by-products to reduce environmental impact.
