Several projects investigating the production of green hydrogen from biomass are receiving funding.

H2 de biomasa proyectos ayudas AGO24

Among them, three projects related to the production of renewable hydrogen from biomass stand out.

Integra2H2 will investigate the production of green hydrogen from biomass and its various uses.

A consortium formed by three public research bodies: the Centre for Energy, Environmental and Technological Research (CIEMAT), the Institute of Ceramic Technology (ITC-AICE) and the City of Energy Foundation (CITY) together with three Spanish SMEs: Kerionics, Greene and Nanogap are driving the Integra2H2 project to investigate the production of green hydrogen from biomass.

The main objective of the Integra2H2 project is to research and develop new, more efficient and sustainable technologies that allow the production of green hydrogen using biomass from agricultural and forestry sources, taking advantage of residual energy to power the processes where it is required.

Thus, the use of biomass gasification will be explored to produce a synthesis gas which, through purification and reforming processes, will be converted into hydrogen. This hydrogen can be used directly as a clean fuel instead of natural gas in the ceramics industry or stored as ammonia, produced at moderate pressures and temperatures thanks to the development of new catalysts based on metal molecules.

The project has been awarded a grant of €3,175,286.20 and will be developed in Cubillos del Sil, León.

FLUID2POWER will manufacture an electric generator with a biomethanol reformer

The project FLUID2POWER, powered by the company Methanol Reformer, It focuses on the manufacture of an off-grid electric generator, which will feature a biomethanol reformer, a fuel cell and electrical storage batteries, all assembled in a 20- to 40-foot container, making it easy to transport and deploy in remote locations with limited access to the electrical grid.

The initiative, which will be developed in the autonomous community of Catalonia and will receive aid of €1,109,660.00, aims to use biomethanol as a renewable energy source for the production of hydrogen, which will then power the fuel cell to generate electricity.

A plant will develop Steam CO2 Reformer technology

A third project, led by the multinational Raven in the Aragon community, seeks to develop steam/CO2 reforming technology to convert organic waste such as municipal solid waste, biosolids, wastewater and biogas into renewable hydrogen and renewable fuels that contribute to the decarbonization of industry and transport.

Using a pyrolysis process, the plant will transform municipal solid waste, biosolids, wastewater, and biogas into hydrogen-rich synthesis gas, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The facility will be located next to the Veolia plant, Located in Fuentes de Ebro, Zaragoza, the project has received €1,441,862.95 in funding to advance the implementation of this technology and the establishment of a green hydrogen hub in the region. An estimated production of 5,250 kg of hydrogen per day is expected by 2026.
