SWEDEN: A renewable and carbon-capturing district heating network

Red de Calor en Suecia

Stockholm Exergi's district heating network in Stockholm is the first in the world to have a pilot carbon capture plant.

Inaugurated in December 2019, the pilot plant is the first step towards building a large-scale facility that could capture 800,000 tons of CO2 per year.

Their goal is to develop the technology that allows the separation of carbon dioxide from biomass combustion gases and then implement it in a commercial-scale plant.

The captured carbon could be stored permanently in rock formations on the seabed or used in industrial processes or in greenhouses.

The carbon capture and storage It is one of the strategies supported by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as part of the effort to achieve the goal of limiting the increase in the average temperature of the planet to 1.5°C.

100% renewable fuels

The company, comprised of the Finnish firm Fortum and the city of Stockholm, will close its last coal-fired boiler at the VƤrtaverket cogeneration plant in Stockholm at the end of spring 2020, two years ahead of schedule.

The power plant replaced most of its coal-based production. with biofuels in 2016. VƤrtaverket produces 2,598GWh of heat, 526GWh of electricity and 304GWh of cooling annually.

Stockholm Exergi serves over 880,000 heating customers. Its distributed chilled water network is used in more than 400 hospitals, data centers, and businesses.

Their forecast is to be using 100% renewable fuels in their facilities by 2022.
