SURE is organizing a training course on BioGemis to calculate biogas GHG emissions in accordance with RED III

webinar SURE sibre biogemis - IDAE

On June 11, SURE, a recognized voluntary scheme for verifying compliance with sustainability criteria and emissions reductions in accordance with RED III, is organizing an online training session aimed at operators and agents in the biogas and biomethane sector.

The aim is to explain in detail how it works BioGemis, the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions calculator applied to biogas.

The session will be opened by Francisco José Domínguez, technician of the Bioenergy and Waste Department of IDAE, which will provide an institutional introduction to the application framework.

Next, Pablo Rodero, responsible for Certifications of AVEBIOM, will present the operation of the voluntary scheme SURE and its role in verifying the sustainability of bioenergy.

The main part of the day will be led by Miguel Ángel Leal, R&D technician of AINIA, who will explain how to use the tool BIOGEMIS for the calculation of GHG emissions from biogas.

This training will enable participants to acquire the necessary knowledge to use the calculator correctly, facilitating the verification of emissions and alignment with the standards required by SURE or other voluntary schemes to comply with RED III.

The workshop is part of the support work that AVEBIOM carries out as a SURE partner in Spain, with the aim of helping operators adapt to the new sustainability, traceability, and emissions reduction requirements introduced by the Renewable Energy Directive. Within this new framework, biogas and biomethane operators must properly document their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and ensure their consistency with the mass balance, as both elements are reviewed during the certification and auditing processes.

RED III has strengthened the sustainability and emissions reduction certification requirements for bioenergy, incorporating new documentation and control requirements for operators. In the case of biogas and biomethane, these aspects are especially important due to the diversity of substrates, production models, and end uses, as well as the need to rigorously demonstrate the emissions savings associated with each value chain.

AVEBIOM has already organized preliminary information sessions on SURE and maintains supporting documentation in Spanish to help operators comply with their obligations in a practical and organized manner. In a recent training session, the association reminded certified operators that they must ensure consistency between the information declared, the quantities recorded, and the mass balance, which will subsequently be verified in an audit.

With this new event, AVEBIOM reinforces its technical support to the biogas and biomethane sector at a key moment for the application of RED III and for the deployment of renewable gases in Spain.
