Bioenergy expands its reach as an option to decarbonize the economy

The electrification of the economy It resonates in the ears of EU citizens as the preferred solution of our policymakers so that we can meet the climate and emissions reduction targets committed to for 2030 and ultimately 2050.

While viable for a very important part of our daily activities, in another equally significant area it is difficult or even physically impossible to supply certain energy needs with electricity, such as maritime transport, air transport or heavy industry, to name a few.

And it is precisely to overcome this difficulty that bioenergy technologies are proving capable of offering efficient solutions to decarbonize these and other activities, guaranteeing, of course, that they meet the strict environmental requirements imposed by our community legislation, as well as the essential and well-proven energy and economic efficiency.

Strengthening ties between the different areas of bioenergy

The Spanish Biomass Association is strengthening ties with other organizations in the bioenergy sector, such as those representing producers of liquid biofuels (bioethanol, ETBE and others), perfectly positioned to replace fossil fuels used in transport quickly and efficiently due to their easy integration into existing infrastructure; also with producers of biochar, a material obtained from processes such as biomass pyrolysis, capable of sequestering and storing CO2 for extended periods of time and which is increasing its implementation in the carbon offset market and also in agricultural applications.

And, of course, with agents who are contributing to the development of biogas and biomethane or the biomethanol, which will have to replace natural gas and other fossil fuels and even play a prominent role in the elimination of CO2.

Thus, we are already seeing industries across all sectors launching projects, some of them large-scale, to replace fossil fuels with various forms of biomass. Sectors such as agri-food, chemicals, paper, and wood demonstrate that bioenergy is a technically and economically viable option, as is also the case in areas such as district heating networks, which in our country already serve hundreds of thousands of homes and service buildings and have eliminated thousands of heating systems that used fossil fuels.

In the future, and even more so if we add the injection of biomethane into fossil gas distribution networks, we will be able to eliminate hundreds of thousands of tons of harmful emissions from populations and continue to advance in the fight against climate change.

For our part, we continue to support the growth of bioenergy with the celebration of the fourth edition of RENEWABLE GAS HALL and from 17th INTERNATIONAL BIOENERGY CONGRESS October 1st and 2nd of this year, and the fair EXPOBIOMASA, By May 2025, the number of companies showcasing innovative biomass-based technologies continues to grow, and thanks to them we will be able to meet our goals for 2030 and 2050.

Access Biomass News magazine no. 10

La electrificación de la economía resuena en los oídos de los ciudadanos de la UE como la solución preferida por nuestros responsables políticos para que podamos cumplir los objetivos climáticos y de rebaja de las emisiones comprometidos para 2030 y en última instancia en 2050.
