The map also provides information on the 37 ENplus® certified pellet distributors and the BIOmasud® certified wood chip, pit, and firewood manufacturers and distributors. Starting with this edition, the map will begin to identify companies that certify their sustainability in accordance with the European Renewable Energy Directive REDII.
Furthermore, it includes data from ENplus® certified pellet factories in Portugal due to their significant impact on the Spanish market.
Pellet plants
The 67 pellet plants are distributed throughout the country, although most are concentrated in the northern half, as is production. Six factories have disappeared, having failed to establish themselves for various reasons, while two new projects are already operational in the provinces of Ourense and Cuenca.
In 2022, four of the largest factories increased their annual production by more than 10,000 tons: ENERBIO, in Catalonia; and BURPELLET-CYLPELLET y NATURPELLET, In Castile and León, these four plants supplied more than 200,000 tons of ENplus® A1 certified pellets last year, nearly a third of the total volume manufactured in Spain.
Another 20 factories increased production, nine of them by more than 1,000 tons per year. And 20 plants did not provide their production data, but these are generally small-scale facilities.
Total national production in 2022 exceeded 635,000 tons, almost 90,000 more than the previous year. The 36 factories with valid ENplus® certification guarantee that over 90% of Spanish pellet production is of A1 quality.
As of September 2023, there are 36 factories and 37 distribution companies with active certification in the ENplus® quality seal.
Wood chip plants, olive pits and firewood
Regarding wood chip production, AVEBIOM has inventoried 57 plants in Spain. Of those that have provided data, only one exceeds 60,000 tons of annual production, and six produce more than 30,000 tons. Several plants have increased their capacity this year.
In the last year they have certified the sustainability of their activity with the entity SURE eighteen facilities. Maderas Campos is the only one that also certifies the quality of its production with BIOmasud®.
Furthermore, 31 olive pit processing plants have been inventoried, two more than in 2022. Five facilities experienced lower production than the previous year due to the anomalous 2022-23 harvest, and only one increased its capacity. In total, six plants and one distributor are certified with BIOmasud®.
The four certified firewood producing companies remain. BIOmasud®.
ENplus® Pellets in Portugal
Due to their influence on the Spanish pellet market, the map includes the location of the 19 Portuguese factories with ENplus® certification. As up-to-date production data is unavailable, the size of the marker on the map only indicates location. Portugal has only one certified distributor.
